Time-out for an upgrade...

At about 8:00 p.m. GMT Wednesday night, the 9th of March, mo'time will be offline as we perform an upgrade. It will take several hours. Here's what we will do:

• Update the post editor to fix a variety of bugs and glitches;
• There will be a new way to create categories for your posts that will be now called "tags", following an emerging standard in the larger blogosphere as pioneered by del.icio.us;
• In the post editor you will no longer see the blog preview below the typing area, but as soon as you post, the page will refresh in the familiar edit mode. This serves two similar purposes; you get a lot more space to type in the editor and much more space to preview and edit your posts and comments;
• The home page you see when you log-in is currently called the Quick Launch page. This will change to, um, Home Page and the new Quick Launch will be a link from the home page that some of you may find more helpful to manage your blog. The other tabs and buttons witll remain the same.

We would like to hear from you about these changes once you start using them -- rants, raves or suggestions. Actually, no rants, please. How about constructive criticism?

hey-hey I like the changes! I especially like the Blog Center bit. (Before it felt as if the blog options were some temperamental folks that had to be hidden somewhere cold and dark so as not to be disturbed.) It makes managing easier, yes. Now that's Quick Launch. : )

Not so much a rant/rave as feedback: I liked being able to preview the blog at the same time that I edit/write the posts instead of the tabula rasa we now have. Seeing both at the same time gives me a perspective of how my post should jive with the rest of the blog.

Also, I don't think the "tags" are working yet? I just posted and selected a tag like I normally would, but the tag does not show up on the actual blog. If I try to go back and edit to fix this, it shows that I've already selected a tag.

Otherwise, I do like the options for what we can do with the blogs up front, and thank you for working to improve Motime!

I appreciate what you are saying, and knew that that particular change would be the hardest one to get used to. We designed it that way from the start because we like it that way too -- for those very reasons.

However, as we grew and as posting and editing seemed to want more room for themselves, we thought about it and came up with this.

In order to take care of that problem, at least a little bit, we added the preview button. In this way you can see how the post fits in without actually posting. It opens up in a new window. You can then correct, and post. I know it takes one more click, but it is a compromise that we made.

I'm curious to how it will seem to you after living with it for a month or so...

Tags: We had to stop in the middle as we found some glitches and it was 3 in the morning. So we'll try to finish it today. Right now the whole tag/category part is disabled. Sorry!

No problem, thank you for your reply, howard. You definitely needed rest!

I'm definitely willing to give the preview button a try. Though as is it's a bit scary because the posting page is so empty, and I feel some sort of weird pressure to fill it all up. Just me, of course. :)
